Since an Executive Order in 2000, US Federal Law has made it a requirement to develop and implement systems which support equal access to medical information regardless of a patient’s native language.

In the United States, approximately 20% of the adult population speaks a language other than English, with around half of those considered as having limited English proficiency (LEP). LEP is associated with poorer health outcomes. For example, according to a 2014 study by the Journal of Immigrant & Minority Health, a disproportionate number of women with LEP fail to follow up on abnormal mammogram results leading to increases in delayed diagnosis.

Similarly, other multicultural societies, such as Australia and the United Kingdom have policies in place requiring healthcare providers to give patients of different cultures and language proficiency access to linguistic services which will optimize their healthcare experience while improving their health outcomes.

LEP often makes patients uncomfortable when communicating with their physician. This can result in poorer diagnosis and care, as well as patients not adhering to the medical advice provided. Where medication is involved the consequences can be higher readmission rates, or worse.

The goal for healthcare providers, such as hospitals, clinics and even insurers is to close the language gap between patients and the healthcare industry to provide the highest possible quality service.
